The role of the Acquisitions Editor (AE) is to focus on expanding the University of Regina Press’s (URP) list and is critical to the Press’s publishing program. The AE is responsible for soliciting, acquiring, and developing scholarly, literary nonfiction, and trade manuscripts for URP, in the following key areas: Canadian studies, Indigenous studies, environmental studies, and other topics in the social sciences and humanities.  The AE collaboratively identifies potential areas for list development. The AE reports to the Director. All activities of the position must operate within the budgets, policies, procedures, and processes of the Press. Finally, the AE should be both culturally and academically literate in order to be able to recognize a good manuscript, and/or to solicit one when the opportunity presents itself.

Primary responsibilities:

1.  Solicit manuscripts. Supporting activities include:

  • Meet with potential authors on campus, scholarly conferences, literary festivals, and in-office to discuss new book projects, research trajectories, publishing experiences. Determine whether URP is the right publisher for a title, and work to bring that author on board.
  • Analyze new proposals and manuscripts to evaluate scholarly or literary contribution, scale of audience, scope and costs of project, and general fit with URP’s publishing program.
  • Read partial or full manuscripts and discuss with authors ways to improve analytical and editorial quality of work.
  • Ensure scholarly integrity of URP books by identifying appropriate peer reviewers, acquiring and analyzing readers’ reports, and processing paperwork including payment for readers.
  • Simultaneously manage editorial process and remain in communication with approximately 30 - 50 authors and/or manuscripts.
  • Present materials to the Faculty Publications Board, and make recommendations to the Faculty Publications Board.

2.  Develop and maintain author, series editor, and other relationships, acting as a guide through the publishing process. Supporting activities include:

  • Guide authors in their response to peer reviews and, once manuscripts are approved for publication, guide authors in revising their manuscripts with a view to addressing readers’ comments, promoting reader comprehension, and developing the best possible book.
  • Ensure compliance with international copyright laws by working with authors to ensure all necessary permissions are in place. The Acquisitions Editor must be aware of copyright issues for text, images, and digital content.
  • Solicit foreword and supplementary material as required.
  • Be aware of legal matters for manuscripts, including possible issues of libel and slander in manuscripts.

3.  Prepare title budgets and publishing contracts. Supporting activities include:

  • Consider, recommend, and, where appropriate, prepare applications for possible funding sources to assist with the cost of publication for each title acquired, including but not limited to the Awards to Scholarly Publications Program (ASPP), and prepare related editorial grant documentation.
  • In conjunction with the Director, negotiate and prepare author contracts and contributor agreements.
  • Conduct market analyses by examining sales and prices of comparable books to establish reasonable sales projections, print runs, and pricing, in consultation with colleagues.
  • Search out and recommend potential co-publishing arrangements.

4. Participate in project planning. Supporting activities include:

  • Consult with the Managing Editor and Art Director regarding preparation of manuscript for production.
  • Consult with the marketing department regarding marketing and promotion of books, including the drafting of catalog content, jacket copy, and the soliciting of endorsements. 

5.  Serve as an ambassador for the Press. Supporting activities include:

  • Represent the Press at professional meetings, scholarly conferences, literary festivals, seminars, and other public functions, both on and off campus.
  • Serve as a public resource formally and informally via lectures and responding to queries.
  • Manage and process book sales, cash and credit, at conferences and events.

6.  Recommend new subject areas and expand the Press’s publishing program. Supporting activities include:

  • Identify gaps in content.
  • Identify potential authors.
  • Identify potential series editors.
  • Identify and enhance areas of strength at the University of Regina.


  • Three to five years of publishing industry experience (preferably in acquisitions).
  • Graduate degree or BA in a related field plus a minimum of 3 years of experience in academia.
  • Demonstrated and continuing relations, and/or first-hand experience working in or alongside Indigenous or other marginalized communities.
  • Superior organizational skills, and the ability to juggle multiple manuscripts and authors throughout the editorial process.
  • Proven communication skills are critical.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to network both in person and online.
  • Strong analytical abilities essential.
  • Financial acumen is required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of Indigenization, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • The ability to travel up to 15% of the time.
  • The ability to work extended hours as needed to support events and high-priority deadlines.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs, to work at a desk for extended periods of time (in office), to walk or stand for extended periods of time (at events).
  • Experience with grant applications preferred.
  • A familiarity with Canada’s literary landscape a plus.
