Production and Design
Design and Production Manager

  • Design books and related materials requiring advanced skills or special handling.
  • Assign, schedule, supervise and evaluate work performed by staff of 4 and freelance designers in order to maintain quality and timeliness of publications.
  • Prepare typesetting, printing and binding specs. Post bid requests, evaluate bids and prepare purchase orders according to official University purchasing procedures. Prepare cost estimates. Review and approve invoices. Prepare annual production budget.
  • Check and approve composition, prepress, and printed proofs to provide quality controls prior to delivery of final product.
  • Schedule and supervise typesetting, printing, and binding of books and related materials in order to meet publishing deadlines.
  • Anticipate, troubleshoot, and help solve problems efficiently in order to stay on schedule.
  • Hire, manage and evaluate staff of four. May also train and supervise production fellow. Participates in weekly editorial meetings and monthly managers meetings.
  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in graphic design or printing technology. Minimum of 8 years of experience in book publishing, design, and production or equivalent. Professional experience and proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite products, including InDesign and Photoshop, to design books, dust jackets, covers, and related marketing materials on a Macintosh PC. Must have experience scheduling and managing multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrated ability to deliver work on schedule and within budget. Experience preparing book manufacturing estimates, including writing bid specifications, posting official bid requests, evaluating bids received from book manufacturing vendors, making award recommendations, and preparing purchase orders. Proven ability and experience communicating, organizing, supervising, scheduling, and managing work performed by other staff, freelancers, and outside vendors.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

MFA degree in graphic design or printing technology. Twelve or more years of experience in book design and book publishing at a trade publisher, university press, other scholarly publisher, or equivalent freelance experience. Expertise in book prepress, printing, and binding procedures and technologies currently in use by both foreign and domestic book manufacturers. ​

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
