Senior Designer


The University of Alabama Press seeks a Senior Designer to join the production department. The Senior Designer is responsible for overseeing the design of covers, jackets, and interiors of 25 – 30 books each year. The responsibilities include design of book jacket or cover, original design or text template design for interior text, preparing and sending final book files (cover, text, and case stamp) to printer, typesetting 20 – 24 books per year, and sending 6 – 10 books to outside compositors per year. All designs must be suitable for production within the budgetary constraints and publishing schedules of the Press, and executed to meet extremely tight schedules. The Senior Designer draws on creativity and experience to produce designs that appropriately enhance the individual books and other materials. Book design includes the interior of the book, which must express the structure of the work, including its illustrations, charts and tables, and scholarly apparatus, in a way that is professional, clearly legible, and accessible to the audience for which it is intended. Book design also includes the jackets and/or covers which must represent the Press and the University on bookstore shelves, on websites, at conference exhibits, and to scholars. Design must be sensitive to the content of the book and scholarship in one of a wide variety of disciplines or may be oriented to the general public of Alabama and around the nation and world. All design must meet the highest standard of contemporary book design and typography as practiced at university presses throughout North America. Elements to be considered include, but are not limited to, selection of typeface and type size, page layout, use of display type, use of color, and incorporation of photos and other illustrations.
Required minimum qualifications include Bachelor’s degree in Art, Graphic Design, Communications, or English and two (2) years of design and typesetting experience with a book publisher.

Required skills and knowledge:
• Expertise in Adobe Creative Cloud, especially InDesign, Photoshop, Bridge, and Illustrator.
• Experience designing, typesetting, and overseeing production of large-format, heavily illustrated, full-color books as well as complicated scholarly books including charts, tables, and special characters, and trade books for a wide audience.
• Experience working with offset printers, both domestic and overseas, and digital printers.
• Knowledge of typographic standards.
• High level of book text design and book typesetting skill. Knowledge of typographic standards.
• Ability to deal knowledgeably with printing and typesetting vendors.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects at a time.
• Keen attention to details.
• Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem resolution skills.
• Mathematical and computer skills.
• Working familiarity with a range of software applications such as Word and Excel.
• Understands and values a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in graphic design.
• Four (4) or more years of experience in book text design and jacket design.
• Experience with a university press, academic book publisher, or other nonprofit book publisher.
• Experience designing, typesetting, and overseeing production of large format, heavily illustrated, full-color books as well as complicated scholarly books including charts, tables, and special characters, and trade books for a wide audience.
• Familiarity with database management.
• High level of expertise in Adobe InDesign using styles.The University of Alabama Press, founded in 1945, is the only university press in the state and is a proud member of the Association of University Presses.
