Description

Stanford University Press seeks an experienced book production editor to oversee the copyediting and production of approximately 25 titles per year from manuscript to bound book. Responsibilities include setting and maintaining schedules; corresponding with authors; supervising the work of freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, compositors and indexers; serving as the liaison with compositors ~~ both in-house and external; overseeing all stages of page proof, digital proofs; inspecting jacket and cover proof at various stages, and close collaboration with acquisitions, design, and marketing teams.

JOB PURPOSE:

Edit and coordinate production on a variety of types of printed material. Provide support for electronic editing and composition by converting, cleaning up, updating, and archiving electronic files provided by authors. Serve as liaison between author and editing, design, and production staff on projects.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Oversee the editing and production from manuscript to book.
  • Supervise the work of freelance copy editors and proofreaders, and prepare manuscripts for design and typesetting.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the production schedule.
  • Inspect jacket copy, jacket mechanicals, and bluelines, and collaborate with design staff and marketing personnel.
  • Assist in training new production staff.
  • Manage involved and technically-challenging books.
  • Serve as liaison to editors, authors, designers, production, and manufacturing.
  • Make important editorial decisions, as needed.
  • Adhere to an established budget,and explain variances.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree and ten years of relevant experience or combination of education and relative experience in book production.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • A thorough knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style is essential. Must have strong familiarity with the current conventions of editorial style in major academic disciplines. Coupled with superior English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
  • Working experience managing print projects, possessing a strong knowledge of traditional and digital printing.
  • Demonstrated experience in on-line text editing and coding
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on experience with all phases of book production, including implementation of Word track changes, thorough knowledge of InDesign and/or similar paging programs. Understanding of basic rudiments of art and design.
  • Experience in implementing document design templates.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in file transfer tools (i.e. FTP/DropBox), file conversion, and printing processes.
  • Experience working and collaborating in a project team.
  • Ability to effectively manage work flow with multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interface with internal departments and external book publication/production community.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully.
  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >50 pounds.
  • Good visual acuity including color vision.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty and odorous environment.
