Yale University offers exciting opportunities for achievement and growth in New Haven, Connecticut. General Purpose: 

Oversees graphic design of all general-interest and academic titles produced by the New Haven office of Yale University Press. Manages the day-to-day operation of the Design Department, providing professional, technical, and aesthetic guidance.

Required Education and Experience: 

Bachelor’s degree and academic training in the graphic arts and 10 years’ staff-level experience in all aspects of book design, including 1 year of management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



  • Strong portfolio of published book interior and jacket/designs, demonstrating creativity, innovation, and knowledge of typography, type design, and all aspects of book and jacket design.
  • Expert knowledge of graphic design software, especially Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat). Familiarity with Microsoft Office. Good technical knowledge of typesetting, prepress, and printing (1-color, 2-color, 4-color).
  • Solid background in art direction, including the ability to cultivate talent, lead a team, achieve timely results, and work under pressure.
  • Superlative diplomacy, including excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and negotiating skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills: ability to communicate design concepts to nondesigners, and convey detailed art direction to in-house and freelance staff. Substantial organizational skills, including time management, prioritization, and attention to detail.
  • Preferred Education and Experience: 4 years’ experience managing staff. Technological savvy, including the ability to embrace new developments and train others in their use. Experience with highly illustrated books, textbooks, scholarly editions, mathematical formulas, tabular material, and similarly complex content. Familiarity with eBook technology and formats (e.g., XML and ePub).
