Production Manager


The University of Alabama Press seeks a Production Manager to lead the production department. The Production Manager is responsible for managing and coordinating all manufacturing and design activities of the Press, preparing specifications and estimates, and overseeing the production budget.
The Production Manager is responsible for managing and coordinating all manufacturing and design activities for approximately 65-70 new books (from manuscript) and 25-50 reprints and/or new in paperback editions per year. Specific duties of the position include overseeing annual expenses of more than $500,000; preparing bids, supervising the bidding process, and analyzing bids; managing vendors and enforcing adherence to schedules; analyzing, assessing, and making recommendations on the viability of art submitted with manuscripts; reviewing all proofs and other samples; preparing cost estimates for new titles and restocks; analyzing restock process to determine availability of files and the ability to manipulate them; and supervise two other production staff members. He/she will also be expected to work closely with other departments in coordinating budgets, restocks, and editorial/production scheduling. Required minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree and at least two (2) years of experience in scholarly or trade book acquisitions and/or book publishing.

•    Ability to adapt to and train others on new technological developments.
•    Stays abreast of changes in book production and printing technologies and workflow.
•    Mac OS proficient.
•    High level of expertise using Microsoft Excel and Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Bridge, and Acrobat).
•    Highly organized, proactive, and efficient with strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize effectively, using initiative and working to deadlines.
•    Experience working with offset and digital printers and binders domestically and overseas.
•    Experience working with compositors and designers.
•    Excellent visual sense and design awareness.
•    Superior understanding of book making, layout, and manufacturing.
•    Database management.
Preferred Qualifications:
•    Advanced degree.
•    Expert in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Bridge, and Acrobat).
•    Familiarity with database management.
•    Solid understanding of the scholarly publishing industry, with an awareness of finances and current printing trends and developments.
