Duties & Responsibilities

Editorial Operations
Identifies, hires, schedules, and directs independent contractors and vendors for copyeditors, developmental editors, proofreaders, and indexers for Harvard Education Press (HEP) books, Case Studies, and Harvard Educational Review (HER). Manages vendor relationships and makes recommendations about maintaining those relationships.

Production
Identifies, hires, schedules, and directs independent contractors and vendors for typesetting, prepress operations, and printing and binding for HEP books, Case Studies, and HER. Evaluates performance and makes recommendations about continued relationships.

Digital Production
Develops strategies for processing, production, and archiving of digital assets relating to HEP books, Case Studies, and HER. Identifies, hires, and directs vendors for e-book conversions, Web-based publications, print-on-demand, and media for other platforms and devices as required. Identifies and monitors best digital practices and techniques, analyzing new opportunities and technologies while proactively researching issues and formulating solutions. Manages and oversees processing of HEPG Website content to ensure that CMS standards and protocol meet current industry best practices.

Manages production modules within the title management system to optimize value of metadata for in-house use and for transmission to outside trading partners.

Budget Development and Oversight
Special responsibility for developing budget and forecasting expenses for all Harvard Education Publishing Group (HEPG) digital assets and digital initiatives. Develops significant aspects of the HEPG editorial operations and production budgets and forecasts expenses.

Design Management
Oversees HEP cover design process: identifies and hires appropriate designers, makes assignments, manages workflow and schedule; leads approval process with editorial and marketing/sales stakeholders.

Administrative
Hires and directs: independent contractors for editorial operations and production services. Oversees interns and temp employees as needed.  Other duties as assigned.

Communication: Internal and External
Leads teleconferences with Ingram project manager regarding status, troubleshooting, and new initiatives relating to HEP e-book publishing program. Serves as primary editorial operations and production contact for a range of projects for vendors and independent contractors as well as for in-house editorial, marketing, and sales personnel and the HER Editorial Board. Communicates diplomatically with HEP and HER authors.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and minimum 3 years of experience in publishing with demonstrated editorial, production, and copyediting skills. Experience with budgets/finance required. Demonstrated experience with publishing schedules and deadlines.

Additional Qualifications

Familiarity with a major style manual and experience with production workflows. Supervisory experience; experience working in a cross-platform digital production environment; and project management experience desired. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and highly developed oral and written communication. The position requires exceptional verbal and written communication skills and the ability to convey information clearly and concisely to a range of professionals, including authors, editors, designers, marketers, and production and manufacturing vendors.
