Marketing Assistant


Posting Summary:

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Marketing Assistant for the University Press. The Marketing Assistant supports the sales, marketing, and promotional activities of the marketing department. This includes updating Press title database/external sales databases, supporting conferences, exhibits, bookstore, and event sales. This position is also responsible for monitoring costs, increasing author exposure (better discovery and increased sales) and increasing brand recognition.

Among the key duties of this position are the following: 
• Coordinates title information seasonally.
• Organizes agendas and takes detailed notes at book launch and other meetings, recording marketing plan decisions following a check list for all title information.
• Maintains and updates the presswide book database (Firebrand Title Management) , ensures marketing book information is correct and complete.
• Updates sales catalog (Edelweiss) database seasonally, checking and troubleshooting data issues with vendors and distributors, in consultation with marketing director and inventory/customer service manager.
• Edits and proofreads marketing materials, including catalogs, brochures, and ads, working closely with the marketing department staff responsible for each material. 
• Represents the Press at exhibits, events or sales meetings as needed, including domestic overnight travel.
• Solicits and supports author and campus events. Solicits accounts for potential author events, in consultation with publicity manager, marketing staff and sales reps.
• Submits books for award consideration, tracks unit and spending costs on awards, advises on policy changes, and informs authors of policies.
• Updates website, social media platforms, and internal databases to reflect and announce award winners, and to otherwise promote books and events.

Minimum Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Marketing, or related fields; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, internet and basic image software. 
• Ability to handle multiple responsibilities and deadlines
• Ability to work independently and as a team 
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel, when necessary, to sites throughout New Jersey and the region for business demands.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1-2 year experience in publishing, book selling, marketing or sales 
• Database experience

Equipment Utilized

• Microsoft Office suite, Adobe, and other standard internet, social media, and image software. 
• Various database software including Firebrand Title Management database and Edelweiss online catalog. 
• Prior experience using any book publishing industry platforms and data standards is a plus (examples include: PubAlley, iPage, Amaon Vendor Central, Nielsen Bookscan, ONIX and BISAC subject codes)

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Must be able to lift 30-40 lb boxes. 
• May require occasional offsite travel within the region area or up to 1 to 3 conferences with 2-3 overnights per meeting per year.
