Finance Manager


Job Description:

To direct and manage the financial and business operations of a publishing organization.


Job Details:



  • Partners with press director on financial, operational, and strategic issues, provides advice based on financial analysis and projections. Participates in strategic planning and goal setting as a member of the press's management team. Provides recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance. Participates in weekly editorial meetings and monthly managers meetings.
  • Develops annual operating budget in conjunction with press director and other press managers and prepares five year budget projections. Prepares monthly financial statements and conducts financial analyses of operating results. Reviews income and expenditure patterns and prepares budget modifications as necessary. Provides other financial reports to press director and managers, as requested.

  • Reviews and approves press invoices, purchasing, reimbursements, and journal entries and ensures the timely and accurate processing of all financial transactions. Oversees reconciliation of Press accounting system with university records and monitors cash flow. Develops internal controls to ensure fiscal adherence to university policies and procedures.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates business staff of five. Identifies and prioritizes assignments to ensure deadlines are met and reviews work for accuracy and compliance with press and university requirements. Areas of responsibility for the business office includes accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, order processing, customer service, payroll and human resources, petty cash, work-in-process, database management, office management, records retention and royalty processing functions.
  • Tracks title subsidies and private gifts, and ensures that all subvention funds are allocated appropriately. Advises director on strategic use of endowed and non-endowed funds.

  • Prepares AUP quarterly and annual reports. Prepares fiscal year end documentation for University Financial Accounting Department.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field. Extensive knowledge of the generally accepted accounting principles, general ledger systems, budgeting, and financial reporting. Experience using MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and databases. Strong communication, project management, multitasking, organizational, and problem solving skills. Previous experience managing others including delegating work, managing conflict, and measuring work performance. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

MBA or CPA highly desirable. Knowledge of the major challenges facing university presses. Experience using order fulfillment software. Financial experience in book publishing environment and inventory control. Familiarity with policies and procedures at the University of Texas at Austin. Experience with Acumen, FileMaker, and DEFINE.
