Acquisitions Editor for Literary and Cultural Studies


The Ohio State University Press, within the College of Arts and Sciences, seeks an Acquisitions Editor to join our team.

Founded in 1957, The Ohio State University Press is a nonprofit scholarly publisher dedicated to advancing knowledge by disseminating scholarship in the humanities and the social sciences, and publishes 50-60 new books annually. Located in the growing city of Columbus, Ohio, The Ohio State University Press seeks a full-time Literary and Cultural Studies Acquiring Editor to solicit, evaluate, acquire, and oversee the publication of 20-24 scholarly books a year in the fields of literary and cultural studies, in keeping with signing goals set annually by the Editor in Chief. The Editor will work closely with other Press departments to manage projects from acquisition to publication.

The Literary and Cultural Studies Acquisitions Editor will strategically acquire and publish 20-24 books per year in literary and cultural studies, with opportunities for list expansion in keeping with the Press’s larger editorial program goals. The Editor will conduct market research as to the viability and profitability of titles; develop thorough knowledge of appropriate academic fields; identify and evaluate prospective manuscripts; cultivate relationships with prospective authors; oversee the peer review process; develop profit & loss statements and informational packets for internal Press use; present projects to the editorial board for final approval; oversee the development and schedules of contracted manuscripts; oversee copyright, illustrations, and all other materials to be included in published book; write promotional copy (for use on book covers, in catalogs, ads, and on web pages); serve as the primary liaison between authors and The Ohio State University Press; and travel to national and international scholarly meetings to represent the Press, manage book exhibits, meet with authors, and sell books.

Required Experience: Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree; humanities degree preferred. Ability to travel to professional conferences (3-5 times annually) required. The position requires demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a key team member. Excellent organizational skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Familiarity with academic trends in the humanities. Understanding of the scholarly book market and computer literacy and competency.

Preferred Experience: Preferred candidates will have a graduate degree in the humanities and experience in scholarly acquisitions or at least one year experience in scholarly publishing or a graduate degree in literary studies and some demonstrated experience/interest in academic publishing. Preferred experience includes working with profit & loss statements and experience with publishing contracts.
