Membership Eligibility Requirements

After reviewing the summary eligibility requirements for the different membership types below, please complete this Membership Interest Form. The AUPresses Central Office will contact you with further information. More detailed eligibility and application information can be found in the Guidelines for Membership and the By-Laws. If your organization is not eligible for one of the membership categories, you may wish to consider becoming an AUPresses Partner.

Prospective Association members should apply for membership at the highest level for which they qualify.

Application Procedure

Regular Membership

Regular Membership is open to non-profit university presses and non-profit scholarly publishers.

Presses are eligible to apply for regular membership if they have published ten or more scholarly titles in the preceding two years. "Scholarly" refers to works of original research. The press must have a committee or board of the faculty (or equivalent, if the press is not affiliated with a university) that certifies the scholarly quality of the books published through peer review consistent with commonly understood notions of peer review. Regular member presses must have at least three full-time equivalent employees, including a director, who reports to the president of the university or college, or to an officer at the vice-presidential or decanal level having both academic and fiscal authority, or to the designated representative of a group of such institutions who shall have both kinds of authority, or to an individual of directly comparable rank and authority to one of the three proceeding classes of individuals.

Regular members are granted voting rights within the association.

Affiliate Membership

Affiliate Membership is open to non-profit university presses and other non-profit scholarly publishers who may not meet the staffing or output requirements for regular membership and/or the editorial review requirements for regular membership.

Affiliate members must meet one of the following editorial criteria:

  • A committee or review board that certifies the scholarly quality of its publications
  • Perform peer review of their scholarly publications in a manner consistent with commonly understood notions of peer review as they may be expressed in any written guidelines for best practice which the Association may from time to time issue or update such as the AAUP Handbook: Best Practices for Peer Review.


Affiliate members must show a sustained committed to scholarly publishing in one of the following ways:

  • Publication of five or more titles in twenty-four months
  • The service of at least one full-time equivalent staff

Affiliate members cannot vote on association business.

Introductory Membership

Introductory membership is open to non-profit scholarly publishers that do not yet meet regular or affiliate membership criteria. If they wish to remain in the association, introductory members must apply for permanent membership (either regular or affiliate) within five years of admission as an introductory member.

Membership Application Procedure

If your press meets the eligibility requirements, you will be sent an application. Applications and supporting materials must be returned to the AUPresses Central Office. Regular and Affiliate applications are evaluated by the AUPresses Admissions and Standards committee, Board of Directors, and voting membership. A minimum of three months generally is required to approve an application. Applications for introductory membership are approved by the Executive Director based on a favorable recommendation by the Admissions and Standards committee and generally are approved within two months of submission.
